In terms of land, there are many
potential ways of putting it to use. When it comes to working towards a self-sufficient sustainable community, the land needs
to be put to its best use. In my opinion this includes using the land not only as a physical resource (e.g. agriculture) but
as a resource for furthering the communities closeness. Listed below are some ways that I believe the land could be used to
promote my vision of a sustainable community.
- Promoting
Agriculture
- A farmers market is an integral part of a sustainable
community. They promote community agriculture, as well as serve as a community forum. They keep neighbors close and promote
distribution of income within the community.
- Some form of a community marketing board needs
to exist. A truly sustainable community cannot exist without income from the outside.
- Support within the community for local agriculture
needs to be strictly enforced. There needs to be a push to only purchase local agricultural goods.
- Community
Structure
- All structures within the community need
to be maximized. Land is limited and needs to be put to its best use. Therefore, all buildings should be multi-functional.
This could mean that the school library is also the only public library etc
- Schools are also the heart of a community,
and should be used for more than just your standard education. There is a possibility of having the local performing arts
studio, exercise facilities, religious hall, ect, all within the one building.
- A sustainable
community also requires numerous Gathering Places. This concept envelops all of my three main components. It provides a place
to congregate and develop self expression, as well as focusing on the community, all while putting the land to its best resource
as a communal building, or open space that can serve many uses.
- Community Housing is also
pertinent in a sustainable community. These buildings conserve less and also promote the community vision of a cohesive, tight knit group.
- As
a side, all building in my vision of a sustainable community are to be built out of a alternative or more sustainable building
materials than in typically
- Community
Gardens
- Community gardens are also pertinent in my vision
of a sustainable community. As another community project, they lend themselves as a gathering place, as well as promoting
health and well-being they nourish the soils and can be an excellent source of greenery for the region.
- With a community garden, the population can further
their dependance on each other all while still putting the land towards its best use.
